Booneville Garden Club, October 2021
by Pat Van Devender
The gathering for the October 20th meeting of the Booneville Garden Club took place at Pizza Italia.
We had a great turnout and our business meeting was productive.
We discussed having a fundraiser this fall, our club T-shirt order, and a scholarship for a high school
student. Also, time to decorate a Christmas tree in front of City Hall is fast approaching. Please call Sue
Hughes at 214-762-8680 to reserve your tree. They go quickly!
Hostess Pat Van Devender introduced guest speaker Paul Nelson, owner of Nelson Greenhouses in Barling. Paul has been in this business for many years and can talk non-stop about what he loves most. He gave us useful tips for over-wintering plants, container gardening for this time of year, and seed saving from Rudbeckia, Johnny Jump-ups, Pansies, Carnations, Dianthus, and Snapdragons. We learned more about annuals, biannuals and perennial flowers. Paul advised us on fall color and hardy winter flowers. He reminded us that leaves are nature's mulch, when to add peat to the soil, how to prune Hibiscus, and said to learn your plants 'language.' They will tell you when there's a need. Far more damages come from over-watering than under-watering. He talked about shade-loving Hosta's, seasonal changes, and taking down webworms. We had a great informative Q & A time.
If you'd like to learn more about gardening or have something to contribute so others can learn, you're welcome to join us at our next meeting.
Please call Anne Cooney at 479-206-1333 for more information.
