This & That, Sept 5, 2022

I do hope all of you had a fun and safe weekend.

I decided to check on the Labor Day holiday. The holiday had its roots during the 19th Century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

The first Labor Day was declared a national holiday in 1884 and was changed from September 5th to the first Monday in September. This year 2022, the first Monday of Sept, fell on the 5th.

The South Logan County Fair is now in progress. Hope everyone goes out to support the fair and the 4H Clubs, FFA, and others to let us see what goes on all year. I always look forward to seeing friends at the fair. Fair time starts Tuesday, Sept. 6 and runs through Saturday, the 10th.

Many of us were sad to hear of the loss of Dr John Ross Williams, M.D. He treated so many patients in various places. He was our doctor for several years and a dear friend.

Services were held in Booneville with burial in Bassett, AR. That’s several miles North of West Memphis and about 12 or 15 miles West of the Mississippi River.

Here is a cute one:
A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking with a fly swatter. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Hunting flies,” he responded. “Oh, killing any?” she asked. “Yep,” three males and two females,” he replied. Intrigued, she asked, “How can you tell them apart?” He responded, “Easy, three were on the beer, and two were on the phone.”

Happy late Birthday to April Alfaro on Sept. 1st, to my granddaughter Arial Krigbaum on Sept. 2nd, to Brad Smith on the 3rd, and to Stanley McConnell on the 4th.

Happy Birthday to Joe Hargar and Paul Lawrence both on Sept. 7, to granddaughter Cassie Massie on Sept. 11, to Sean Lunsford on the 13th, to Betty Henry, Kenneth Parks, and grandson Jordan Reid all on Sept. 14, to Linda Gibson and Marley Littleton both on the 15th. We wish you many more.

Happy Anniversary to Seth and Courtney Holt on September 10, to Stanley and Pat McConnell on sept. 19th, I have #63 for them. We wish you all many more.

The Covid and variants are still going around. Many are having strep throat along with it now. Please do what you can to keep it down.

The next full moon will be on Sept. 10. Grandparents Day will be on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Football is in the air, and Volleyball is going strong, too. Golf is also now a school sport, so there are plenty of opportunities to support our students.

In History: Sept. 1 (the year is 2/3rds gone)
1715: Following a reign of 72 years, King Louis XIV (14th) of France died four days before his 77th birthday. He would have begun his reign at about 4 1/2 years old, the way I figured it.
1923: The Japanese cities of Tokyo and Yokohama were devastated by an earthquake that claimed some 140,000 lives.

Everyone take care. That’s all today.
